After years of anticipation, the Utawarerumono franchise has officially returned with a new installment titled Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered. Developed by AQUAPLUS and published by DMM GAMES and Shiravune, the game launched on PC (Steam) on May 27, 2026.

Story: Darkness looms over Yamato once again

The story continues after the events of Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten. The Yamato Empire is enjoying a period of peace under the rule of Mikado — a god who walks among humans. Names like Oshtor, Mikazuchi, Munechika, and Shunya have become heroes after repelling the invasion from the ancient land of Arva Shulan.

However, peace does not last long. Monsters begin appearing across the realm, scattered events slowly connect into something larger, and former companions must rise once more to confront a new threat. Meanwhile, somewhere beyond the white mist, a long slumber is about to end...

The game immediately raises an intriguing question: "Did this happen long ago... or in a distant future?" — a familiar opening that still succeeds in drawing players into its world.

Oshtor (voiced by Kentaro Tone) is a warrior from the frontier province of Ennakamuy. Following the events of Monochrome Mobius, he becomes the Right Imperial Guard — one of Yamato's two "Twin Shields." The mask he wears was inherited from his late mentor, Dikotoma.

Shunya (voiced by Yuko Minaguchi) is a young woman from Arva Shulan, a land said to exist at the edge of the world. She is currently recovering in the mountains of Ennakamuy after her previous adventures alongside Oshtor and his companions.

Munechika (voiced by Saori Hayami) is the daughter of Murasame, lord of Izumo. Her gentle and polite appearance hides the heart of a fierce warrior beneath the surface.

Mikazuchi (voiced by Yuya Uchida) comes from Ashiwara, the city of storms. Like Oshtor, he serves as an Imperial Guard and wears a mask passed down from a legendary ancestor within his family line.

Gameplay: Turn-based JRPG combat with the Action Ring system

Past and Present Rediscovered is a large-scale turn-based JRPG. One of its defining features is the Action Ring system — a mechanic that appeared in previous entries and returns here to add rhythm and strategic depth to battles. Players can unleash special abilities and harness the power of ancient masks to defeat enemies.

Outside of combat, players can explore the vast lands of Yamato, reunite with familiar faces from previous Utawarerumono titles, and meet many new companions along the way.

Development team

The project brings together creators closely associated with the franchise's history. NAOYA SHIMOKAWA serves as producer and music director, having previously worked on ToHeart and White Album 2. The scenario and worldbuilding are handled by MUNEMITSU SUGA, writer of the original Utawarerumono series. Character designs are created by MI, known for work on Monochrome Mobius, alongside original concept art from TATSUKI AMADUYU and MISATO MITSUMI.

This is a game aimed at players who enjoy story-driven JRPG experiences, especially longtime fans of the Utawarerumono franchise. For newcomers, it also offers a chance to discover one of Japan's most notable RPG series known for its rich storytelling and worldbuilding.
