Directive 8020: survival challenge against a shapeshifting entity in space
On May 12, 2026, Supermassive Games – the studio behind hit titles such as Until Dawn and The Quarry – officially released its latest sci-fi horror game, Directive 8020. The game is now available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The last hope of humanity on Tau Ceti f
The story of Directive 8020 takes place as Earth is slowly dying, forcing humanity to search for a new home 12 light-years away. The planet Tau Ceti f is seen as the final beacon of hope. However, disaster strikes when the colony ship Cassiopeia suffers a malfunction and crashes on the planet’s surface. The crew quickly realizes they are not alone in the depths of space.
Players take on the role of astronaut Young (portrayed by actress Lashana Lynch), leading the crew as they face an alien organism capable of perfectly mimicking its prey. When the enemy can hide in plain sight by taking the form of trusted teammates, trust becomes a rare commodity.
Survival gameplay and consequential choices
Unlike previous titles from the studio, Directive 8020 places a stronger emphasis on intense survival gameplay. Players must hide, craft improvised weapons, and react quickly to survive encounters in the dark corridors of the Cassiopeia.
A signature feature of Supermassive Games remains through its branching narrative system. With the new Turning Points feature, every decision alters the storyline, unlocks hidden paths, and leads to multiple possible endings. Players must face difficult dilemmas: save themselves and their crew, or risk everything for the survival of Earth.
Cinematic experience and multiplayer mode
Directive 8020 delivers a cinematic experience with highly detailed visuals and immersive sound design. To enhance the tension, the game features a Couch-co-op Movie Night mode, allowing up to five players to participate together. You and your friends can control different crew members, making life-or-death decisions while surviving system failures and alien infiltration.
Who is human, and who is the impostor? The answer lies in your hands. Directive 8020 is shaping up to be a new benchmark for sci-fi horror games in 2026.
