Star Fox officially returns on Nintendo Switch 2 with a fully reimagined version
After many years of absence, fans of the legendary space shooter series can finally experience a new version of Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2. Released on June 25, 2026 as an exclusive title, this product marks a promising return that completely reimagines the classic story from Star Fox 64.
Not a remaster — this is a cinematic reimagining
Nintendo positions this title as a "cinematic reimagining" rather than a simple resolution upgrade or traditional remaster. All visuals have been completely rebuilt from the ground up to take full advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. In addition, the game features entirely new voice acting for the characters and a reorchestrated soundtrack with a grand orchestral style.
The story continues to follow Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team on their mission to defend the Lylat system from the threat of the evil scientist Dr. Andross. Players will reunite with familiar allies including Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad, and Peppy Hare.
Space combat gameplay stays true to its core with added options
The core experience remains focused on piloting the Arwing spacecraft in fast-paced space combat. Players perform high-speed maneuvers through enemy formations, execute barrel rolls to dodge attacks, and use homing lasers and bombs to eliminate hostile targets. However, this version introduces several notable new gameplay options:
- Flexible camera perspectives: Players can switch between the traditional third-person view or a first-person perspective directly from inside the cockpit.
- New control support: The game integrates mouse-like control via the Joy-Con 2 controller, offering a fresh way to experience combat.
- Difficulty system and replay value: The game features three difficulty modes: Easy (enhanced durability and stronger lasers), Normal (default), and Expert (unlocked after earning enough medals). In addition, the branching path structure allows different mission routes depending on performance and completed objectives.
Explore diverse locations across the Lylat system
The Star Fox team's journey takes players through a wide variety of space environments and planets:
- Corneria: The cultural and political center of the system, home to the Corneria Defense Force headquarters.
- Fichina: An icy planet with 90% of its surface covered in snow.
- Solar: The system's second smallest star, featuring extremely harsh temperatures.
- Zoness: Once a tourist paradise, now heavily polluted.
- Meteo and Sector Y: A dangerous dense asteroid belt and a vast region of cosmic debris.
Multiplayer mode and exclusive interactive features
In addition to the story-driven campaign, the game includes a Battle Mode designed for multiplayer experiences. The online mode supports 4v4 matches across three maps: Corneria, Sector Y, and Fichina, each with unique rules and objectives. For offline play, a two-player co-op mode allows one player to pilot the ship while the other handles targeting and shooting.
The game also fully utilizes new Nintendo Switch 2 features. GameShare allows players to share the game and play with friends via the GameChat app without requiring them to own a copy. Meanwhile, USB camera support enables fun AR filters in GameChat, letting players transform into Star Fox-style characters with fox ears, helmets, or sunglasses.
Additionally, amiibo scanning for Fox, Falco, and Wolf unlocks special backgrounds and badges in Battle Mode. A Challenge Mode also offers unique objectives where players can earn rewards such as Holoviewer logs.
A free demo is currently available on the Nintendo eShop. This demo includes the full tutorial experience and the Meteo asteroid belt stage, allowing players to try the game before purchasing the full version.
